SIX

Commander Sonju reluctantly sent a small task force down to the planet’s surface based on Madrik’s information. Protocol demanded Confederation approval of the mission since an official investigation hadn’t commenced, but Madrik insisted they act quickly. It was Kloro’s recommendation that secured the commander’s approval. Only he seemed to understand that Madrik couldn’t leave his mate behind. Stopping Baris would be an added bonus.

It was a sticky situation, acting within the Marauders’ code of conduct while wanting to seek revenge on Baris Vedeche. Madrik couldn’t wait to get his hands on him. The man was a spineless measlewort who gained his power through blackmail. Siana had shown him images of what Baris did to people. Madrik would enjoy making him squirm. But first he had to find Siana, make sure she was all right, and then he would demand answers for why he suddenly found himself mated to her!

They set the shuttle down on the outskirts of Dac Loria to avoid detection and had to hike in. It was dusk and they stuck to the shadows, but people still took notice of the small task force of Marauders. The people of Dac Loria were on-edge and expecting the next attack. Madrik had grown up in this atmosphere of anticipated war. He suspected they were pleased to see the feared Marauders within their city. The Confederation never intervened when he was a citizen, struggling against rebel strongholds. But the Confederation had an interest now – thanks to the current parliament who sought Confederation involvement.

Since it would have taken an hour to reach Baris’s compound by foot, the Marauders “borrowed” a hover transport. It quickly skimmed over the rocky terrain and soon they spotted the tall walls surrounding the compound. Madrik’s heart quickened because Siana was inside and soon he would be reunited with her. Just the thought made his head feel a little better and his stomach hurt a little less.

He could feel Kloro’s gaze resting on him as Kessler set the transport down behind a stone outcropping not far from the compound. “Nothing foolish, Captain,” Kloro murmured.

“No, sir,” Madrik answered readily enough but already his mind was back on Siana and how he planned to get her away from Baris. Kessler’s chiding snort barely registered.

“Just lead me to the dancing ladies,” Kessler laughed but no one else joined in as they studied the compound. Maybe Madrik wasn’t the only one who had a bad feeling in his gut.

They grabbed their gear and quickly surveyed the area. The compound stood alone. Ribaria was nothing more than a desert so there were no trees to shield them. Even the rocky outcroppings were cleared a fair distance from the walls. Thankfully it was growing dark and the light from the two moons was dim, casting shadows amongst the rocks. There were only two guards monitoring the one entrance but Madrik knew better than to think this would be an easy mission. Baris was tricky and would have various modes of surveillance. He’d always been arrogant about his inventions.
